Gebel Kamil is a meteorite impact crater located in the southern part of Egypt's Eastern Desert, near the border with Sudan. This crater was formed by the impact of a meteorite that struck the Earth's surface around 5,000 years ago. The Gebel Kamil meteorite is of particular interest to scientists due to its well-preserved nature and the valuable insights it provides into the formation and composition of meteorites.

The Gebel Kamil crater was discovered in 2009 by an expedition led by Italian geologist Vincenzo De Michele. The impact site was initially identified through satellite imagery, which showed a circular depression in the desert landscape. Subsequent field investigations confirmed that this depression was indeed an impact crater caused by a meteorite strike.

The meteorite that created the Gebel Kamil crater is estimated to have been around 1.3 meters in diameter and weighed approximately 5,000 kilograms. The impact of such a large meteorite would have released an enormous amount of energy, causing the immediate area surrounding the crater to be heavily fragmented and melted. The shock waves generated by the impact would have also resulted in widespread damage to the surrounding landscape.
