Both the orthoceris and ammonite had a
head and front body portion that would have looked very similar to a
modern-day squid, with grasping "arms" and tentacles. Modern cephalopods are
the squid, octopus, cuttlefish and nautiloid. Only the Nautilus today has a
shell. |

Length - about 12" long and weighs 3.5 pounds.
A large display specimen of an extinct cephalopod. The Orthoceris existed
from the Lower ordovician Through Upper Triassic. 350 million to 190 million
years ago. The orthoceris was a very close "cousin" to the ammonite in that
they were both cephalopods and existed during the same time periods and both
had an outer shell. The ammonite had a curved or rounded shell and the
orthoceris had a straight shell.
