Indian artifacts - Indian pottery - Anasazi people
We recently obtained about two hundred pounds of this authentic
Anasazi Indian pottery. We have separated it into zip-lok type bags
of one pound each. Guaranteed nice pottery shards in each bag. We
have taken two one-pound bags and spread it out to show the different
types, colors, and markings that make up each bag.
This material was surface collected from a couple of huge ranches
located in the four-corners area of Arizona. It had become a hoard,
or accumulation, of about 30 years of collecting the material. We
were fortunate to be able to obtain this material. The area where
Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado meet is called the "four
corners" area.
Anasazi is a Navaho word that
means "Ancient Ones." From piecing together archeological information
it is believed that the Anasazi peoples existed from about 500
BC to around 1200 AD. The Anasazi
settled in what is today called the Four Corners area. They were
the people who built the famous cliff dwelling at Mesa Verde.
The area of Mesa Verde is now a national park which contains over
4,000 known archeological sites and includes about 600 cliff dwellings.
Chaco Canyon, located in the Four-Corners area is know to have been
both the political and economic center of the eastern Anasazi world
by AD 1000. Many structures, including some very large communal
buildings with over a hundred rooms were constructed for the growing
population within this area. Archeological evidence suggest these
peaceful peoples were planting crops of corn, squash, and beans. The
Anasazi peoples are known for their making of the cliff dwellings,
the work with woven baskets, their pottery making skills, and their
making of bone and stone tools.
