Malachite is a Basic Copper Carbonate. Hardness 3-1/3 to 4. Malachite is a
secondary copper mineral and develops in the zone of alteration in massive,
load, and sisseminated hydrothermal replacement deposits. Associate minerals
are azurite, limonite, and chalcopyrite.
The name "Malachite" is from the Greek word moloche, "mallow", in
allusion to the mineral's leaf-green color. Malachite is used as an ore
of copper and as a gemstone. Malachite beads are very popular as well as
cabochons and carvings.
