Hematite, Botryoidal, Morocco.
Hematie is an Iron Oxide. Hardness
5-6. In 40 year in this business this
is the very first time I have seen these great looking formations of
Hematite. We got these at the Tucson Wholdsale show this year (2005).
The name "hematite" is from the Greek haimatites, "bloodlike", in
reference to the vivid red color of the powder. Hematite is
principally used as an ore of iron. Hematite takes a good polish and
is also used in beads, cabochons, and other jewelry items. It is a
member of the "Simple Oxides" group.
These specimens have not been polished, or treaded in any way. The
beautifull rounded, smooth masses are natural.
