M725 - Iridescent crystals of pure bismuth.
Natural crystals of bismuth are extremely rare. These crystals were grown in a laboratory in Florida.
Scarce as silver, heavier than lead, a one cubic foot cube of bismuth would weigh over 600 pounds! It is classified as a semi-precious metal.
Non-toxic to humans, bismuth is used in both medicine and cosmetics. It has applications in inks, paints, free machining steels, fire sprinklers and others.
These crystals have a very metallic look to them. They remind me of the "chrome" plated parts in model car kits, but they weigh a whole lot more!
The patterns these crystals
form is fascinating to the eye, almost like one of the optical
illusion paintings by M.C. Escher. The fellows at the lab
say they know of no way to control the pattern formed, nor
of any way to control the colors of the crystals, which ranges
from purple, through blue, to yellow; all with an iridescent
sheen.
