Onyx-Marble, Banded (Georgia)
Also called "Banded Onyx", "Bacon
Onyx", "Cave Onyx", and "Marble-Onyx". This material comes in white,
yellow, brown, pale
reddish, and is a translucent calcareous sinter. Develops as a dripstone
formation or as a precipitate from warm springs. Consist
of calcite or aragonite. According to the "Handbook of Rocks,
Minerals, & Gemstones" by Walter Schumann, (1993, Houghton Mifflin
Company.) the term onyx used on its own for this calcareous rock is
misleading. Sometimes passed off as alabaster.

Most of
this material has colorful banding, formed as a result of water
percolating through the ground and depositing its minerals in caves
and cavities. This material was personally collected by Ray Hill. |
