Fire Agate from Calvillo, Mexico

I used sunlight to illuminate these shots.

These pictures still do not do these specimens justice because I failed to show how the mineral has a 3-D look to it. The "bubbles" are well below the surface of the transparent "honey".

Does your collection include Fire Agate?

M608 - Doesn't look like much, does it? Ahhhh.... but look closer! This polished Fire Agate is beautiful stuff! It looks like dark honey has been poured over bubbles that have a gold, red or green sheen. It looks great under normal room lighting, but it really shows its colors under sunlight!

Fire Agate is prized as a semi-precious gemstone and makes beautiful stones for all types jewelry. Agate is a member of the quartz family. Silicon Dioxide. Hardness 7. Fire agate is considered a Chalcedony. The beautiful colors of this stone are as a result of a play of light on the translucent inner formation of the stone.

A side shot of a specimen.

These specimens fluoresce a bright green color under a long wave ultraviolet light.
