M571 -
Georgia
Hydroxides group. Hardness 5 to 5-1/2.
Hydrogen iron oxide. Goethite is also called Needle Iron Ore. It forms
by the oxidation of iron-rich deposits. Turns magnetic when heated.
This material was broken from large
Limonite geodes with black shiny Goethite inside. Most of the geodes
were filled with a colorful sand and some of the geodes had sea-shell
impressions on the outside. Ray personally collected these on a rock
collecting trip to southern Georgia.
These
stones are from Georgia.
