Malachite Eggs (South Africa)
Ground and polished malachite "eggs". Malachite is a
member of the
Carbonates group which includes Azurite, Calcite, Magnesite,
Rhodochrosite, Smithsonite, Aragonite, Witherite, Strontianite, Cerussite,
Dolomite, and Aurichalcite. Malachite is a basic copper
carbonate. Hardness 3-1/2 to 4. As a mineral it is an important ore of
copper. Malachite has been used in making gemstones for jewelry for
perhaps thousands of years. Malachite cut into cabochons and beads
are very popular. It is also very popular as a stone used in carvings due
to its relative softness and the fact that it takes a good polish.
Malachite is named for the Greek word for "mallow", a
green herb.
