FIRE OPAL  Thumbnail-  HYDROUS SILICA    - MEXICO

M552 - Hydrous silica, often with some iron and aluminum. Used as a gemstone.  This material is called “Cherry Opal” where found by the locals in Mexico.  The word is from the Sanskrit “upala”, meaning “precious stone”.  The specimens show a play color, commonly called “fire”.  The color of these specimens run from a yellow/orange to a brown/orange.   Mexico
