Anhydrite (Angelite)

M545 -Sometimes called "e;Angelite"e;, Anhydrite is calcium sulfate, an important rock-forming mineral in evaporative deposits of chemical sedimentary rocks, where it is associated with halite and gypsum, and it occurs with barite and gypsum in carbonates.

The name is from the Greek and means "without water."

Anhydrite is a mineral - anhydrous calcium sulfate. The hardness is 3.5 and the specific gravity of 2.9. Anhydrite is commonly associate with calcite, halite, and sulfides such as galena, chalcopyrite, molybdenite and pyrite in vein deposits. Anhydrite is most frequently found in evaporite deposits with gypsum; it was , for instance, first discovered, in 1794, in a salt mine. Anhydrite is used in the manufacture of some cement, a source of sulfate or sulfuric acid. Anhydrite is popular as a mineral specimen.
