M454 - Iron Oxide. Hardness 5-6. Hematite is the principal ore of iron. The name "hematite" is from the Greek word haimatites, meaning "bloodlike", in reference to the vivid red color of the powder. Thin plates of botryoidal hematite. Plates are about 1/4" to 3/8" thick.
