M395 -
Hematite Jasper, "Arabic Writing Rock" (India).
Hematite Jasper. Silicon dioxide. Hardness 7. This
material is
commonly called "Arabic Writing Rock". If you look close at the
white streaks in these stones you will see why it is called
that. The stone is a reddish color with white streaks running all
through it. The white streaks are fossil SEASHELLS.
We got a small supply of these at the recent Cobb County Gem & Mineral
Society show held in Marietta, GA. I didn't know whether I should call these
gemstones, mineral specimens, or fossil specimens. Yes, they are considered
fossil stone. Yes, they can be cut and make fantastic cabochons. And, yes,
they are excellent for any mineral or rock collection.
