Dolomite

When in this
form, the material is called Dolomite Rock. Calcium
magnesium carbonate. Hardness 3.5 to 4. Occurs
almost exclusively as a marine sedimentary rock,
associated with limestone. Dolomite is named for the
French mineralogist Deodat de Dolomieu.
Dolomite is a
common sedimentary rock-forming mineral that can be
found in massive beds several hundred feet thick.
Dolomite is found all over the world and are quite
common in sidimentary rock
sequences. These rocks are called appropriately
enough dolomite, or
dolomitic limestone. Dolomite rock, like limestone,
has many industrial uses, including as asphalt
filler, concrete aggregate, riprap, and roofing
granules. It is also used as flux in iron smelting
and is a source for metallic magnesium.
