Iron oxide. Hardness 5-1/2 to
6-1/2. Lodestone is commonly called "Nature's Own Magnet"
because it has the ability to attract metal ore such as iron. It is very
black and heavy. The lodestone is rich in iron itself and is used to make
steel. The name derives from Magnesia, an ancient district bordering on
Macedonia. Utah. If you're a rock collector you need one of these! Neat
