We have several flats of this pretty Celestite
from Madagascar.
Celistite, also called Celestine, is a mineral consisting of strontium sulfate. It is mostly found in sedimentary rocks, often associated with the minerals gypsum, anhydrite, and halite. Celestite has the same structure as Barite, and forms very similar crystals. The nice crystals, good luster and attractive blue color make fine specimens of celestite an outstanding mineral for someone's cabinet or display case. The specimens here formed as geodes and are from Madagascar. Celestite is found worldwide, usually in small quantities.
Although being a relatively soft mineral of 3 to 3-1/2 on the Mohs scale, celestite is sometimes used in producing jewelry.
Celestite (strontium sulphate) is used in fireworks, because of its ability to burn with a bright red flame. Strontium also has uses in the chemical and pharmaceutical industires. Strontium is widely used to manufacture glass for use in video displays like television sets. Because trontium is much less toxic than either lead or barium, it is now used almost exclusively for cathode ray tubes in televisions and computers.
Celestite derives its name from the Latin term "caelestis" which means (of the sky) and refers to the blue color commonly observed in celestite.
Big beautiful "A-Grade" specimens.
