- Iron (Hematite) Concretions,Utah.
Small hematite concretions from
the Navajo Sandstone Formations in
Utah. Scientist have discovered that these concretions are nearly identical
to those found on MARS by the Mars rover "Opportunity". Scientist
named them "Martian Blueberries." Since
they need water to form, their discovery is an important proof that
water once existed on mars. These specimens, about 25 million years
old, are unique to the red rock formations of Southern Utah and to
the red planet, Mars. On Earth, they are found in and around Zion
National Park, Snow Canyon State Park, and other locations with the
Navajo Sandstone Formations. On Mars, "Opportunity" found
them on a
broad plain, Meridiani Planum.
Also called moqui marbles or moqui balls. The larger concretions were
used by early American Indians as game balls and medicine balls.
