M207 - Chalcopyrite
Chalcopyrite has a golden yellow color, similar to that of pyrite, but not the same chemically. Chalcopyrite is a copper iron sulfide mineral. It has a brassy to golden yellow color and a hardness of 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale. Pyrite is a much harder material and has a hardness of 6 to 6-1/2. On exposure to air, chalcopyrite oxidises to a variety of oxides, hydroxides and sulfates. Due to its color and high copper content, chalcopyrite has often been referred to as "yellow copper."
Due to its color and high copper content, chalcopyrite has often been referred to as "yellow copper". The word chalcopyrite is from the Greek, "chalkos", copper, hence, "Copper Pyrite." It is called Peacock Ore due to the beautiful coloring. The specimens here range in color from shades of yellow, green, blue, purple, red and lavender. These specimens are from Mexico.
