The color in amethyst is due to irradiation, which caused the iron ions present as impurities in quartz to rearrange themselves in the crystal lattice affecting the color in reversible process. Amethyst as a gemstone is produced into many jewelry items, including beads, cabochons, faceted stones, carvings, and many others. Amethyst is the official gemstone for February.
