Fossil Oyster Shells - Fossil Bivalve Molluscs - Fossil Molluscs - Fossil Oysters - Fossil Shells
Beautifully double-sided formed shell of these fossil oyster shells
from the mountains of Peru. Distinct ridges. Natural finish. The
zigzag pattern created by two conflicting need: to keep the shell
tightly closed against predators, and the need to open the shell to
allow water to be circulated and filtered during feeding. These
specimens are from Casamarea, Peru. Unknown
specie. Age: Jurasic. 150,000,000 years.
Oysters are bivalve molluscs. All oysters are filter feeders,
drawing water in over their gills through the beating of cilia;
Plankton and particles are trapped in the mucus of a gill, and from
there are transported to the mount where they are eaten. The
squestion is usually "how is it that these marine animals are found in
the mountains?" The obvious answer is that at one time the area
where the fossils are being found was once covered by oceans.
