Cavansite is a member of the Zeolite group of minerals. It is a hydrated Calcium Vanadium Silicate, from which this beautiful mineral derives its name. Class: Silicates. Hardness 3-4 on Mohs scale. Collected at Poona, India. Cavalsite has deep blue radiating acicular prismatic crystlas, forming spherical rosettes. Cavansite usually forms in pockets in volcanic basalts. Igneous formation. The mineral Cavansite was discovered within the past 30 years, and so far has only been found in two locations: Poona, India and in Oregon. Thus making this a very rare and much sought after mineral.
Cavansite is associated with other members of the zeolite group: Stilbite, heulandite, apophyllite, analcime, chabazite, natrolite, phillipsite, chabazite, analcime, and others. While cavansite does contain vanadium, and could thus be a possible ore source for the element, it is not generally considered an ore mineral. Because of its rich color and the fact that is a rare mineral. Cavansite is sought after by mineral collectors. Crystal aggregates consit of spherical rosettes with jutting pointed crystals. The deep blue color of even the smallest cavansite crystals is truly amazing.
