Black Tourmaline (Schorl) in a white quartz matrix. The white quartz is referred to a "milky quartz" because of its white color. A few pieces have small spots of a white/silver mica. In collecting this material, Ray found that the black tourmaline crystals were in an area where white quartz, white feldspar, mica, and associated material was located.
Tourmaline belongs to the trigonal crystal system. Tourmaline has a variety of colors. Usually, iron-rich tourmalines are black to bluish-black to a deep brown, while magnesium-rich varieties are brown to yellow, and lithium-rich tourmalines are almost any color: blue, green, red, yellow, pink etc. Tourmaline is a semi-precious gemstone.
Tourmaline is a crystal silicate mineral compounded with elements such as aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, or potassium. Schorl is the most common of all tourmaline species. Tourmaline is found in two main geological occurrences. Igneous rocks, in particular granite and granite pegmatite and in metamorphic rocks such as schist and marble. Schorl Tourmaline has a hardness of 7 to 7-1/2 on the mohs scale.
