Snake Skin Agate
From the Mojave Desert in Arizona, these unusual agate specimens are not tumbled, but are in the natural state in which they were found.
They have been erroded by wind and sand while sitting atop the desert floor.
The interior of most of these specimens is a hard, clear to smoky chalcedony; and could be used for cabbing. But the specimens are more interesting for their "snake skin" markings caused by the forces of nature in an extreme environment.
This unusual agate resembles the skin of a snake in appearance, thus the name snakeskin agate or snake skin agate. The material ranges in color from a pink, cream, tan, reddish browns, with shades of these colors. The snakeskin agate is actually a chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of quartz. Hardness 7 on the Mohs scale. These stones are often cut into beautiful shapes including cabochons and made into beads. Snakeskin agate is considered a gemstone. At Great South Gems & Minerals you will find a good selection of snakeskin agate for sale.
