biotite mica schist - micaladen rock - mica - quartz - feldspar
Dark, blackish looking, biotite mica schist from Ellenwood,
Georgia. Ray has been at it again! He got his hammer and chisel out and collected this material locally.
Workers are in the process of grading a large area for a Super Wal-Mart near by, and they have
unearthed some large boulders while grading the area. These specimens were taken from those boulders.
It was obvious when collecting this material that the boulders were
of metamorphic origin. There were light and dark streaks, or layers,
running through-out the boulders. This is the result or the process
of like minerals coming together into layers, a process called
gneiss. This process is a result of time + pressure+ heat inside the
earth, causing like-minerals to separate into layers.
Schist is a medium-to course-grained, often shiny, mica-laden rock.
Schist is commonly composed of a mica, either Biotite, muscovite,
chlorites, and is often associated with garnets or staurolites. Schist rocks are a mixture of mica, quartz, and feldspar. Small areas of pyrite was noticed while breaking this material into specimens.
