Very colorful material. Cryptocrystalline for of silica, a specific variety of quartz. Silicon Dioxide. Chalcedony occurs in many varieties. Many semi-precious gemstones are of a variety of chalcedony, such as: Agate, aventurine, carnelian, sunstone, chrysoprase, moss agate.
As early of the Bronze Age chalcedony was used in the Mediterranean region, for example, on Minoan Crete at the Palace of Knossos, chalcedony seals and cabochon like pendents dating back to circa 1800 BC were found. People in the Central Asian trade routes used various forms of chalcedony to carge intaglios, and beads that show strong Graeco-Roman influence.

At least three varieties of chalcedony were used in the Jewish High Priest's Breastplate. (Moses' brother Aaron wore the Breastplate, with inscribed gems representing the twelve tribes of Israel). The Breastplate included jasper, chrysoprase and sardonyx, and there is some debate as to whether other agates were also used. Archaeologist have dug up Babylonian and Assyrian chalcedony cylinder-seals dating from 2500 to 500 BC.
Chalcedony frequently pseudomorphs after organic materials. A well-known example is petrified wood, wood that has been completely transformed into Chalcedony (or one of several other minerals). In the Petrified Forest National Monument in Arizona, an entire forest was transformed into petrified wood. Remains of this ancient forest can be seen in the huge petrified logs that are found in the area. Another well-known pseudomorph is Chalcedony after coral. Underneath the Tampa Bay in Florida, much coral has been replaced by Chalcedony, and its original form is preserved.
Hardness 7. Used today as a semi-precious gemstone, commonly made into cabochons, beads, carvings, faceted stones, and tumbled.
