marble - calcium carbonate - metamorphic rock - shining stone - marmaroso
White or Pink marble from the Georgia Marble Company mine located
near the beautiful mountain town of Tate, Georgia. Marble is a
calcium carbonate. It is a metamorphic rock found in many parts of
the world. Marble is composed of shells of marine organisms, changed
by a metamorphic process of time, pressure, and heat. Marble is
considered a metamorphosed limestone. Both the white and pink marble
specimens shown here come from different locations at the same mine
in Tate, Georgia.
Georgia is one of the largest producers of marble in the United
States. Beautiful marble from Tate, Georgia has been used in the
construction of 60% of the monuments in Washington, DC and was used
in the construction of the US Capitol building, The Georgia state
capitol building located in Atlanta was constructed in 1889 using
marble from the Pickins County, Tate, Georgia quarry.
In addition to being a great building component and for making
statuary, many new uses for calcium carbonate, marble, are being
discovered regularly.

Pure white marble is the result of metamorphism of very pure
limestone. The characteristic swirls and veins of many colored
marble varieties are usually due to various mineral impurities such
as clay, silt, sand, iron oxides, or chert which were originally
persent as grains or layers in the limestone. Marble can come in
many colors, such as black, white, green, brown, pink.
The word marble derives from the Greek word marmaroso, meaning
"shining stone".
