• Raspberry (Grossular) Garnet • (Mexico)
Referred to as "Raspberry" garnets due to their brilliant pinkish/red color. These are the Grossular variety of the garnet family. Grossular is a calcium-aluminum garnet, though the calcium may in part be replaced by ferrous iron and the aluminum by ferric iron. The name grossular is derived from the botanical name for the gooseberry, "grossularia", in reference to the green garnet of this composition that is found in Siberia. Grossular garnets are found in contact metamorphosed limestone with vesuvianite, diopside, wollastonite and wernerite. From Mexico.
The varieties of garnet are: Almandine, Pyrope, Spessartine, Andradite, Grossular, Uvarovite, and the lesser known species Knorringite.
Pure crystals of garnet are widely used as gemstones. The gemstone varieties occur in shades of green, red, yellow and orange. In the USA it is known as the birthstone for January. It is the state mineral of Connecticut. The garnet is also New York's gemstone, and star garnet is the state gemstone of Idaho.
Due to the hardness of garnet, 6.0 to 7.5, it has many industrial uses, including abrasives and filtration.
