Meteorite Iron - Sikhote - Alin
Meteorite in 3" X 4" Ryker frame.
Iron meteorites are meteorites that consist overwhelmingly of nickel-iron alloys. The metal taken from these meteorites is known as meteoric iron and was one of the earliest sources of usable iron available to humans.
According to Wikipedia, the on-line encyclopedia, metal meteorites are fairly rare compared to "stony meteorites", making up about 5.7% of witnessed falls. According to scientist there are three basic types of meteorites: Nickel-iron, stoney meteorites with metal inclusions, and stoney meteorites, with many sub-groups of these. Stoney meteorites are composed mainly of silicate.
