Libyan desert glass (LDG), or great sand sea glass is a substance found in areas in the Libyan Desert. Fragments of desert glass can be found over large areas, up to tens of kilometers.

A Meteorite impacted in the Sahara desert about 29,000,000 years ago on the border of Libya and Egypt. The extremely high heat melted the desert sands and formed this translucent glass. It was first used by man about 10,000 years ago and was also used in an amulet by the Egyptian King Tutankhamun.

Nearly pure silica (98 wt%) it is the purest natural glass in the world. It can be heated to 1700 degrees Farenheit, before it melts, 500 degrees Celcius. Higher than any other natural glass.

This desert glass is considered a tektite, along with Moldavite and the blackish rounded glass pieces coming out of China and other areas. There is considerable disagreement as to the formation of tektites. The most widely accepted theory is that the desert glass, as well as Moldavites and other tektites, was formed by a meteorite striking the earth. Another theory is that this material is actually from outer space itself; a meteorite that exploded upon entering the earths atmosphere, scattering the material over a large area. Although there is no scientific evidence to support this theory.
