Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass. Mostly found in a plain black glass, but occasionally there is the snowflake obsidian, and those with either a gold-like sheen, or a silver-like sheen. Obsidian is an igneous rock, formed by volcanos. It is a melted silica. Hardness 6-1/2.
Obsidian has been prized for thousands of years by early man for making arrowheads, axes, knives and other useful tools. Today, obsidian is used in making carvings, beads, and semi-precious stones. Obsidian is easily ground and polished and is popular in lapidary work.
