F950 - Whale Inner Ear Bone. Fossilized inner ear bone of a whale. 3 to 4 inches in length. Whales dive to tremendous depths in search of food and it is awfully dark down there, so they evolved a system that they can use to "see" with their ears. These bones (there are left and right bones) are part of their echo location system.
From off the coast of Charleston, S.C., these are approximately 10 to 30 million years old.
$12.50 each ~or~ $18.50 for a right and left bone of the same size; however, the chances that they came from the same whale are pretty remote. |
