Blood-red fossilized sea coral chunks that have been polished. From China. We believe this particular species of coral is a member of the Tabulates family and thought to be from the Devonian period. About 400
million years old. This material is usually color enhanced (Died) and us commonly used for jewelry. I took my trusty 'ol hammer and disassembled on a piece of this material when we received this shipment. What I found was that the material is red only on the outside. The inside of the specimen (In the one I took apart...) is a creamish color. You can very plainly see the structure of the coral itself inside the piece. I also took a knife to the broken piece and found that I could very lightly scratch the inside, meaning that the hardness is about a 6.
