A few years ago the movie "JAWS" came out and made such an impression on those that saw the movie that many vowed never to go into the ocean again. The movie portrayed this giant man-eater shark that was aggressive toward boats and man. Really fearsome.
Well, as the saying goes.. "you ain't seen nothing yet!" The shark teeth shown here are from the specie Carcharodon Megalodon, a giant shark that is now extinct. They are usually referred to as C Megalodon. It is believed that this giant shark once swam in all oceans of the world as their teeth have been found in waters all over the globe. The C Megalodon is regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators in vertebrate history. Fossil remains indicate that this giant shark reached a total length of between 50 and 70 feet.
Scientist believe that the Carcharodon Megalodon shark existed from approximately 28 million years ago up until about 1.5 million years ago.
The color of these fossil teeth is as a result of the sediment, usually a dark mud-like silt, in which they were found. The teeth are petrified, meaning that they have through a mineral displacement process.
