Megalodon Shark Tooth - Carcharodon Megalodon sharks
Megalodon Shark Tooth. South Carolina, USA. Specimen measures 4-1/2" long and weighs 6.0 ounces.
The Carcharodon Megalodon sharks, members of the Chondrichthyes group, had cartilaginous skeletons and as a general rule were not fossilized like their teeth. Their finely serrated edges make the teeth of large sharks razor-sharp. Sharks of the genus Carcharodon have been known since the Upper Cretaceous onwards. Scientist believe, base on the size of the Megalodon's teeth, that this shark reached lengths of over 50 feet.
