Fossilized ancient species of brachipod. Believed to be from the Devonian to Mississppian periods, between 400 to 300 million years old. Found in Indiana. Platystrophia clarksvillensis, Phylun: Brachipoda, Class: Articulata.
All brachipods are marine animals that have hard shells on the upper and lower surfaces. Most species of brachiopods went extinct during the P-tr Extinction, about 250 million years ago, but there are about 300 to 500 species that have survived to today. According to scientist there are about 10,000 species that have become extinct. All brachiopods have a crown of tentacles that filters food particles out of the sea water.

Species of brachiopods have been found in size from about 1/4" to around 12" in diameter. Scientist have found that brachiopods have a life span of from 3 to over 30 years.
