Mammuthus - woolly mammoth - Mammoth hair
Real hair from an extinct Woolly
Mammoth.
The Woolly mammoths were members of Elephantidae family. The
species: Mammuthus primigenius. Scientist believe this species of
mammoth existed form approximately 150,000 years ago until as recent
as about 10,000 years ago when it became extince. The Woolly
mammoths had long stringy-like hair that served to protect them from
the harsh frozen climates in which they lived. They also had a thick
layer of a fine underwool, for which the woolly mammoth is
named. The coats of the woolly mammoth were very similar to the
muskoxen and it is very possible that the Mammoths moulted in
summer. This could explain how it is possible to find Mammoth hair
today, frozen in ice in Siberia.
This Woolly Mammoth hair is sealed between two plastic plates for protection.
