This dish has a good polish to the inside and outer edges. Can be used for display, as an ashtray or candy dish.
This is a beautiful dish that has been fashioned from a black marble. The dish shows a good contrast between the black marble and the fossil shells within the stone. The material itself is in the range of 350 to 400 million years old. Devonian period. The whitish fossils that show up in the black marble are ammonites, a type of cephalopod, a squid like critter that had an outer shell.
Modern cephalopods are squids, octopus, cuttlefish, and nautilus. Only the nautilus still has an outer shell. Marble is a metamorphic rock. This looks like a limestone that has gone through a heat/pressure/time process and has changed into marble.
