cephalopod fossils - cephalopods - ammonites
Large polished black marble matrix with whitish cephalopod fossils
clearly showing in the stone. These are larger pieces. Every piece
is different shaped. Can be used for soap dish, ashtray, candy dish,
or as an attractive display specimen.
The Orthoceras is an extinct
cephalopod,
a squid-like creature. The Orthoceras is a very close relative
to the extinct ammonites. They were both cephalopods with tentacles
like modern-day squids and octopus. The ammonite sported a round
shell and the orthoceras had a long straight shell. If you went
back in time, caught an ammonite and an orthoceras, pulled them
out of their respective shells and laid them out side by side,
the two creatures would look almost identical.
