S419 - MANGANO CALCITE FISH CARVING, STAND-UP

FISH CARVING, STAND-UP, MANGANO CALCITE, PERU

Pink and black manganoan calcite. Good contrast between the pink and the black in these stone. The pink portion of these stones is rich in manganese which gives the mineral a pink color. These statue-like carvings range in size from 8" to 12" tall. Mangano calcite is sometimes confused with rhodochrosite. The amount of manganese in mangano calcite varies at different locations, and in fact the mineral forms a solid solution series between calcite and rhodochrosite, with the color becoming redder with a higher proportion of manganese.

The black portion of these carvings is a black calcite. The black calcite is formed from a metalliferous ore deposits combining with the calcite mineral.

Both the black calcites and the mangano calcites are widely used in carvings, beads, spheres, eggs, and other decorative items. Although calcite is rarely used in jewelry due to it being a fairly soft stone, measuring 3 on the mohs scale. Mangano calcite turns a brilliant orange color when placed under a fluorescent light.
