In modern times this material has been used for making beads, cabochons, and other uses in jewelry making. Obsidian comes in an array of colors, such as Snowflake Obsidian, which is a favorite for carving and for the lapidary field, Black, Brown, Rainbow, Silver sheen, Gold sheen, and occasionally green, and, rarely clear. Natural small obsidian nodules are called Apache Tears. These are prized by collectors and used as beads. Obsidian is an Igneous rock that occurs in lava flows. Obsidian has a high silicon dioxide (quartz) content.
