Early man discovered thousands of years ago that certain types of rocks would chip, or flake a certain way when struck with another rock. Today we call this the fracture. Certain rocks, mainly the rocks made of silica, will fracture, or chip, or break, a certain way when struck a certain way. All varieties of quartz... agate, jasper, chert, flint, opal, carnelian, amethyst, and glass, have what we call a Conchoidal fracture. Meaning that the parent rock will chip or flake a certain way, consistently. Will this simple discovery, man found that he could take stones and shape them into different shapes, thus altering the shape of the rock to different forms for use as tools, weapons, decoration and such. Scientist believe man has advanced as rapidly as he has as a result of his learning to use this technology.

Early man used rocks that have a Conchoidal fracture to make arrowheads, drill points, knives, axes, and many other items, with which they could gather food, build their homes, scrape animal skins to manufacture clothing, start their fires, and many other uses.
