• Large Apache Tears •
Iron oxide - Nature's Own Magnet - Lodestone
24 piece flat of real large Apache Tears. These specimens have been
cleaned of matrix. From Arizona. These are natural glass volcanic
nodules, found in Perlite matrix.
These stones are so called as a result of a legand of a very sad
event that took place in American history. The natural glass nodules
are found in an area near Superior, Arizona. Back during the mid
1800's right near the site where the stones are being found, near
Superior, Arizona, there is a large plateau where a band of Apache
Indians chose to commit suicide, rather than surrender to the US
Calvary. These brave men chose to jump off a very high cliff of the
plateau rather than be captured or driven off to reservations. The
story goes that for many years after this tragic event, Apache women
would gather at the base of the cliffs, cry, chant, and make
offerings to those brave relatives that had given their lives for the
cause of freedom. It is said the the bones of these brave men,
bleached white by the sun and weather, could be seen from the base of
the cliffs. The story goes, that the tears of the weeping women are
now found in the area as these smooth, round, glassy nodules. Thus
the legend of the Apache tears.
